We will start the course by looking at the foundations of Aromatherapy and exploring what the term Aromatherapy means to us.
The definition of Aromatherapy is the controlled and informed use of essential oils to maintain and/ or improve the health of the mind/body and spirit.
This in simple terms could refer to a variety of aspects concerned with your treatment.
Firstly we are controlling the way we feel as therapists before even starting a treatment. We need to make sure that we are feeling relaxed and happy before carrying out a treatment as our energy needs to be balanced and positive when treating a client.
We control that our working environment is appropriately clean and safe and relaxing prior to the treatment.
We control that we perform a thorough client consultation prior to the treatment to control that relevant cautions are observed and the appropriate organic essential oils are selected.
We control that we are using the best quality organic and natural essential oils and carrier oils for maximum therapeutic benefit.
We make sure that our knowledge of the oils selected is very high.
If you are taking the Professional Clinical Aromatherapy full diploma we will be learning and effectively selecting from at least 55 essential oils, a selection of carrier oils and hydrolats so we have full understanding on the individual and combined therapeutic benefits and chemical makeup of each particular essential oil.
The main concern of an Aromatherapist is to treat the person, not the disease. This involves careful consideration of quantity of oil and why each oil is chosen for its specific effect.
The words controlled and informed mean just this. The amounts of essential oils chosen are specific for a particular individual at a particular time. It is in this way that an Aromatherapist provides a holistic treatment.
The term ‘aromatherapy’ was first invented in 1928 by the French chemist Rene Maurice Gattefosse. After burning his hand in a laboratory accident, he discovered the healing properties of lavender and other essential oils when he used them to help to heal the burns. He then proceeded to discover the healing qualities if essential oils by treating wounded soldiers from World War 1. Aromatherapists aim to treat the person and not necessarily the disease.
